Beard again, with my review of Seeds of Destruction and a look into how I got on.
First of all, thanks to all those who turned up to wage war, both from within the club and from outside. It was great to see people from as far away as Worcester and Bristol for our first club tournament.
After much deliberation, I ran an Iron Hands detachment, 3 formations, Skyhammer Annihilation Force, Battle Demi-Company and a command unit consisting of a Captain.
You can download my list by clicking here.
I decided to throw everything at being aggressive and making the most of the alpha strike, so given the current Meta in Cardiff, the skyhammer Annhilation force, included 2 10 man devastator squads, armed with 2 grav cannons and 2 multimeltas. This allowed me to combat squad them if needed, so 1 pod could take on 2 targets! You’d be surprised how effective that was!
The assault squads had 2 flamers attached in each to thin out any protective bubbles around vehicles to try reduce any cover around the targets of the devastator squads. A third Pod was included in my Demi company with another devastator squad with 2 further grav cannons. A captain in Cataphractii armour also found himself in said pod, to give those cannons slow and purposeful!
That wasn’t the coupe de grace though, I had a chapter master, with all the toys, Articifer Armour, Storm Shield, Gorgon’s Chain, lightning Claw, Power Fist, all on a bike, so 2+/3++/2FNP........(Can someone say CHEEEEEEESE?), included within a command squads also armed to the teeth. Chapter Master “Smash B*st*rd” was his moniker and he lived upto it. Tau, Nurgle Deamons, Ravenwing, Chaos renegades and Necrons all felt his wrath and while his command squad may have disappeared on more than one occasion, Chapter Master SB lived throughout all 5 rounds!
Game 1 - Ravenwing with a Knight ally first, Dawn of War deployment – My Grav Cannons and Multi Meltas went to say hello to the Knight but sadly he didn’t hang around too long. Under sheer weight of fire, Dark Angels slowly disappeared – End Result – Iron Hands Victory
Game 2 – Necrons, Hammer & Anvil, the yearly Iron Hands picnic was interrupted by a Necron Dynasty. Chapter Master SB & his retinue scouted up the table and charged into the HQ hierarchy to stop any shinanegans from going down, leaving devastator squads and assault squads to clear up and take objectives – End Result – Narrow Victory to the Iron Hands
Game 3 – Chaos Renegades, Vanguard Strike – Drop Pods came down with 1 objective in mind, destroying Maulerfiends and vindicators before they could tear a hole in the front line and they only just achieved it, by immobilising 2 maulerfiends and by taking out the vindicator. With that achieved I only had the worry about earth shaker cannons & rapier batteries, which try as they might, struggled against the Iron Hands command – End Result – Victory once more for the Iron Hands.
Game 4 – Chaos Nurgle Deamons, Hammer & Anvil – Somehow I’d found myself on table 1! Nurgle Deamons with no armour saves, fast moving beasts and all sorts of Chaos shenanigans meant that my devastators were pretty much redundant, however they more than made up for it in combat, surviving several rounds. Once Chapter Master SB got into combat, he was deadly, but unfortunately, Papa Nurgle had just too many gribblies to hand – End Result – Chaos Deamons Victory
Game 5 – Farsight Tau – Dawn of War-ish?! – final game against Chris from our own club, with bragging rights on the line – Throughout the game, we decided we didn’t like dawn of war and through out the game, it looked like we’d ended up playing Hammer & Anvil and later on Vanguard strike! Some unlucky objective dice rolls cost Tau on turn 2, and the Iron Hands were quick to take advantage, Chapter Master SB and his crew took care of 2 units before smashing into a third but enough Tau suits has dropped while taking on the Death Star and devastators that the Iron Hands tactical squads kept an eye over objectives – End Result - Iron hands Victory
Part 3 of my blog, coming next week, I’ll discuss how I did it, what I learned and how I can use this to still play casual games but also think competitively when I have to!
