I didn't really know what to expect going into the league, but was very happy to find myself in Division Two (after being soundly beaten by most of the renegades I had played in the run up). I was also pretty happy with my list which had evolved through these defeats to a stage where I actually felt like I knew what I was doing...my Warriors of the Dark Gods army, led by the mighty Lord Absolutcnut (careful spelling required!), was based around an anvil of pestilence warriors (the Huskarler of Sigtuna) with a battle standard bearer; two units of fast moving lust chosen; and the frenzied crusher knights...they were ably supported by my Sorcerer, Harthacnut, whose main role was to fly around on his disc and immolate enemies with alchemy magic missiles; a mauler chariot (slow but incredibly resilient); and some chaff (warhounds and barbarian horsemen)...my list is below for your amusement...
Absolutcnut, Lord of Sigtuna, Anointed Lord of Chaos, General, Mark of Pestilence, Ogre Sword, Dragon Mantle, Charm of Cursed Iron, Necrotic Miasma & Shield
Harthacnut, Sorcerer, Three Learned Spells (Path of Alchemy), Mark of Change, Disc of Change, Sceptre of Power, Lucky Shield
Lothbrok, Anointed Harbinger of Chaos, Battle Standard, Mark of Pestilence, Flaming Standard, Dueller's Shield, Lucky Charm, Razor Blade, Waste Hardened Skin
Huskarler of Sigtuna, 25 Wasteland Warriors, Mark of Pestilence, Musician, Veteran Standard Bearer, Banner of Speed
Ramsey's Pack, 8 Warhounds
The Unsullied, 5 Barbarian Horsemen, Throwing Weapons
Raoingar of Sigtuna, 10 Chosen, Mark of Lust, Halberds, Standard Bearer, Banner of Temptation
Jotnarak of Sigtuna, 10 Chosen, Mark of Lust, Halberds
The Harbinger of Pain, Wasteland Mauler Chariot
Blades of Cnut, 4 Crusher Knights, Daemon Weapons, Musician
Game 1 v Dread Elves
I played Gary first up - his list is over on the battle league pages - but it included a big block of spears; executioners; a Kraken; a divine altar (man, that thing is brutal); a Dread Prince and a crossbow bunker for his Mage. Breakthrough was the secondary with counterthrust deployment, Gary took first turn...
I misplayed deployment and placed my crushers too far away from the action which meant the Dread Elves pushed hard in T1... perhaps too hard though & I managed to get a charge into the kraken with Lord Absolutcnut, the Warriors and a unit of chosen on T2...the Chaos Lord dispatched the beast and the warriors reformed to flank Gary's army...my chosen overrunning into the flank of his executioners...
T3, the gloves were off & Gary sent his altar & dark acolytes into the lust chosen (who were in the flank of the executioners) & proceeded to smash them with ease...this allowed some nice reforms/overruns further into my lines...the Dread Prince and his spear block also charged the warriors, but they bit off more than they could chew (I don't imagine pestilence warriors would be very tasty mind) and were sent packing...special mention to Lothbrok (my battle standard bearer) who nearly killed the Dread Prince in a single round of combat! I chased but didn't catch and so charged them again in my turn, again failing to catch, but sending them scattering through units across the board...this was a massive mistake by me as it allowed the warriors to be flanked by executioners and rear charged by the acolytes in T4, who beat me in combat (my characters couldn't fight as flank & rear) but neither could catch my lord, bsb and warriors when they fled...phew!
The rest of the game was spent with the crushers taking the executioners and then moving to contest the breakthrough objective (Gary eventually rallied & reformed his spear block to breakthrough into my deployment zone) whilst the mauler chariot and divine altar slugged it out in a grind...it ended up being a 12-8 win to the warriors (I was up by 666 points, a sign of the dark gods pleasure no doubt!)...the game could have swung big either way if either of us had caught the others fleeing general so probably a fair outcome...a hard fought contest against a true scholar & gentleman...
The chill night air had started to bite as the weary warriors made camp following the battle. Although the dark light of many elven souls had been extinguished forever, not one of the Huskarler had spoken since they were forced to flee from combat. The ignominy! Harthacnut broke the silence with a spiteful laugh "See brother, the master of change was watching you today. Your hubris turned to modesty in but one roll of the dice". "Remember your place brother" replied the Lord of Sigtuna with a quiet menace. "This was but a test of greater challenges to come..."
